Why can’t you see in outer space and why can’t you hear in a rainforest?
A conversation, with sound illustrations, with the composer and sound artist
Francisco López in advance of his performance at EMPAC in Troy, New York
on April 28, 29, 30, 2011. Touching on his past and future creations and experiments
including a 2001 work for the now inaccessible Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage interior and
even a recording of our Clocktower clockworks. Plus a a profile of his remarkable new
project, SONM (Sound Archive of Experimental Music and Sound Art), in Murcia, Spain.

About the EMPAC project: Hyper-Rainforest is a monumental sound piece
(90 speakers and 64 channels in two nested hemispheres of integrated speakers).
All music in this performance stems from field recordings—but it does not simulate
the natural reality of the original locations. Instead, the work creates a sonic hyper-reality,
a virtual world of sound and music that goes beyond a trip to a rainforest.
The original materials are observed, analyzed, and composed to create a piece that surrounds
the audience, moving deep into the sounds themselves and toward new sounds still rooted
in their origins. This world premiere, was commissioned by and developed in residence
at EMPAC (The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center,
a part of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute). The curator is Micah Silver.

J. Milo Taylor (April-May 2012)

Is an intermedia artist and academic researcher whose current interests are located around notions of affect, immersivity, memory and loss. He currently holds a position as Research Fellow in Interactive Systems at the University of Sussex (UK). His work has been presented internationally and has often involved interdisciplinary collaboration, sound and variable medias. Particular tropes in his practice include sound, improvisation, virtual environments, interactivity and archives.

His recent research has been directed towards the re-mediation and re-activation of experimental European sound practice in both historical and contemporary senses. While digital media facilitates the integration of previously distinct formats, this flattening can be healthily problematicised. A central part of the proposed research is to explore the multitude of meanings the SONM archive presents to contemporary audiences.

RESEARCH

The scope of the planned research, while dependant upon the specific and idiosyncratic nature of the SONM archive itself will seek to trace the “sonic wayfaring” undertaken by Francisco López in his 30 years of extraordinary creative activity. López’s travels offer an unique insight into the locations, organisations, medias, individuals and collectives that have participated in the continuing development of a (non-academic) art of sound.

It is my intuition that the material contained in the SONM archive will offer contemporary audiences a personal, and practice-based “contra-archive” which, I hope, can challenge the official, top down canon as proposed by Anglo-American academic discourse. This potential, I suggest, is both timely and essential for a reinvigoration of the debates surrounding sound art practices in 21st century Europe and beyond. My research will take place and will spread its results within the context of a European project I am closely involved with, called “Opensound”, which includes seven European sound art organisations: Apo33 (FR), Piksel (NO), Antitesi (IT), Audiolab Arteleku (ES), Granular (PT), Modus (UK) and NK (DE).

MetaminaFNR introduce a new programming, after the emissions during the last May of the double cassette compilation “Madrid is Ruido” released by the label “For Noise’s Sake “, after some clandestine broadcasts and the search for a new server where to stay temporarily. In December we will be devoted to listening the great project “A Tasty of Small Signals” edited on DVD for the label Störung (Barcelona) and the Centro Puertas de Castilla (Murcia) and curated by Francisco López.

2 minutes 91 microcompositions made by 7 international artists: James Webb, Lawrence English, Francisco López, Asmus Tietchens, Louis Dufort, Alan Courtis y Zbigniew Karkowski.

We wanted to stream it in a special way and work on the possibilities of the code and experiment with new broadcasts formats. For that we are developed a script in Pure Data which will mix up the 91 microcompositions on the fly, following different probability distributions (Markov Chains) assigned to each of the fragment, so we will listen different versions and structures of the mixer depending on the day and time.
